The Effect of Trenbolone Acetate on the Rates of Liveweight Loss and Subsequent Gain by Steers Grazing Native Pasture in Northern Australia
نویسندگان
چکیده
Twenty-five Droughtmaster steers were implanted with 300 mg trenbolone acetate and 25 control non-implanted steers grazed the same unimproved native pasture for a dry and a wet season prior to being dispatched to the abattoir. The treated steers lost significantly (P c 0.05) less liveweight during the dry season and gained significantly (P c 0.001) more liveweight in the following wet season than the controls. At slaughter of the steers at the end of the wet season, 9 months after treatment, the mean carcass weight of the treated steers was 8 kg heavier than that of the controls, the difference just failing to reach statistical significance (P = 0.08).

Grazing methods and stocking rates for direct-seeded alfalfa pastures: I. Plant productivity and animal performance.
A 4-yr study was conducted to determine the effects of two grazing methods (GM) at two stocking rates (SR) on alfalfa pasture plant productivity and animal performance and to ascertain the effect of grazing systems on subsequent performance of steers fed a high-concentrate diet. Eight pasture plots (.76 ha) were seeded in 1988 with alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. var. WL225) and divided into two bl...
متن کاملEffects of Level of Dried Distiller’s Grains Supplementation on Native Pasture and Subsequent Effects on Wheat Pasture Gains
One hundred twenty crossbred steers (450 lb, +/37 lb) were stratified by weight and randomly assigned to one of two feeding blocks. The cattle grazed dormant rangeland for 56 days from October 12 through December 7. Each block was supplemented three times a week with the equivalent of 7 days of dried corn distiller’s grains (DDG) at 0, 0.25, 0.50, or 0.75% body weight (BW)/d on a dry matter bas...
متن کاملModelling the effect of nematode parasites on the liveweight gain of lambs grazing alternately with cattle
A dynamic model for nematode parasites in lambs which links their adult parasite burden with liveweight gain was extended to investigate alternate grazing with cattle to provide relatively larval-free pasture for finishing lambs. Liveweight performance of weaned lambs was tracked fortnightly under rotational grazing using three cattle:sheep ratios, with three initial parasite burdens and two in...
متن کاملEffect of compensatory growth on feed intake and feed conversion efficiency of heavyweight steers
Compensatory growth is an integral part ofNew Zealand beef production systems (Nicol and Kitessa, 1997) with restricted winter nutrition followed by good spring and summer feeding enabling a better fit with seasonal pasture production. Purchasers of store cattle (including feedlotters) often prefer animals with a previous history of perturbed growth because they believe they can benefit from hi...
متن کاملEffects of beef production system on animal performance and carcass characteristics.
The objective of this study was to evaluate conventional (CONV) and natural (NAT) beef production systems from annual pasture through finishing through grazing. Beef steers (n=180, initial BW=250±19 kg) were assigned randomly to 2 treatments in the pasture phase. Steers were implanted with 40 mg of trenbolone acetate (TBA), 8 mg estradiol, and 29 mg tylosin tartrate (CONV), or received no impla...
